New Year Resolutions Of Note
In Sunday’s December 30, 07 Daily Journal on page A-2 a story ran
about New Year resolutions. Journal reporters Gary Mays and Bill Byrns
asked several area elected officials what their New Year resolution was. Here are
three of note.
County Board Member Ann Bernard: She said
"My resolution in 2008 is to make every effort to stop any and all new landfills
or landfill expansions in Kankakee County in order to protect our greatest
natural resource, the Kankakee River." "Because protecting our river is the
greatest gift we can give future generations." An important
resolution for all of us to have for 2008.
It was interesting to read Mayor Green's
response. Mayor Green changed the question from New Year resolution to
what he wants to happen for his legacy He said several things including the
completion of the ethanol plant and development at the 308 exit. "I want these
projects to be my legacy" as mayor said Green. "These are some projects I'd
like to see finished before my term is up" No mentioned of the Barbara-Volini
garbage dump which will be the only thing he will be remembered for because he
willingly pushed for a 236 acre 200’ high garbage mountain which will have its
base in the deep aquifer and drain directly into the river via Minnie Creek
thereby polluting the area water supply of thousands.
He also said he was optimistic about the Barbara-Volini
ethanol company. Hmm talk about being out of touch. (Read the latest on the
ethanol company elsewhere on this site.)
County Board Chairman Karl Kruse said "I
would still like to get the County in financial shape and keep it in the best
financial condition we possibly can. We've done a good job of increasing our
year-end balances and hopefully, we can continue to do that through 08." Sounds
like an admission County finances are not that good due to the ever expanding
payroll and the enhanced pension plan for elected officials.
