A proposal to convert municipal waste in Lake County, Indiana to ethanol is moving forward. The Lake County Solid Waste Management District Board has approved a preliminary contract with Powers Energy One, formerly Genahol-Powers 1 LLC, for a $200 million plant. A final contract is expected to be approved after a 30 day comment period.
Lake County Solid Waste Management District Executive Director Jeff Langbehn says the company's proposal for dealing with garbage was more attractive than two other candidates. One of those companies was also proposing a waste-to-ethanol facility and the other was the current landfill provider, Allied.
Langbehn says the plant will be operating in less than two years, creating hundreds of construction jobs. He says the plant will also employ hundreds of Lake County residents once it is up and running. 90% of the garbage stream will be recycled because of this plant
Mayor Green and Economic Alliance CEO Mike Van Mill,
