POWER and OUTRAGE has learned the Kankakee Valley Airport Authority has the power to stop the City of Kankakee/ Town & Country landfill but has quietly given it the go ahead. All they have to do is pass an ordinance prohibiting the dump. This power is granted to them through State Statue 620 ILCS 25. Such an ordinance has already been used in Lake Of The Hills to prohibit garbage dumps near an airport there.
Giant landfills near airports pose a great risk to aircraft because of the thousands of birds they attract.
Several area pilots and supporters of POWER and OUTRAGE attended the April Kankakee Valley Airport Authority board meeting. Guess what we learned? The Airport Authority is going along with Mr. Volini’s dump because he has promised to control the thousands of birds that will be attracted to his dump. When asked how this would be done, they had no answer. They also said the public should have spoken to them before now. What a joke!
We also took note their attorney is one of the City of Kankakee attorneys. When issues of conflict of interest and safety were brought up, their attorney became very angry and was not happy with the fact these issues were being raised in front of a Journal reporter. I guess they don’t like sunshine on them. This is another example of the good old boy network in Kankakee County.
