Who Is Porky Penny? Porky was born one night in the heat of political battle. The County government was trying to pass a one cent sales tax referendum to build a jail.

The County published a handout flyer promoting the sales tax referendum featuring the image of a penny on its cover. In an attempt to minimize the magnitude of the proposed tax they attached called it a "Penny for Public Safety".

Our financial people researched the cost a building a jail and found that it was greatly overpriced. We also compounded the growth of sales tax revenues and determined that the 1-cent tax would bring in at leas a quarter of a billion dollars of revenue over a 20-year financing period.

Realizing the proposal was laden with Pork we invented a counter to the "Penny For Public Safety" image by imposing a piglet on a penny. We named her Porky Penny.

Porky was fiercely attacked the proponents of the tax referendum in an add campaign. Her blistering and spirited attacks Porky helped defeat the referendum by a 72% to 28% margin. She has become a mighty political fighter and has subsequently defeated three other referenda-one by a margin of 80% to 20%.

PORKY PENNY awards are given to government programs and politicians who spend our tax dollars foolishly. Awards are made on a one to four Porker basis.
